Anderson Silva Backs Jon Jones in Beef With Israel Adesanya

As the war of words continues between Israel Adesanya and Jon Jones, Anderson Silva has come to the defense of the latter.

Before Adesanya won the middleweight interim belt at UFC 236, he let it be known that he hopes to face and beat Jones, like he did with another great, the aforementioned Silva. Jones didn’t care for those comments, and the two have traded verbal shots since.

Well more recently, Silva was asked to weigh-on on the situation, and the legendary fighter had this to say (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“The way I see it, as an athlete, he disrespected Jon Jones,” Silva said. “I think for the business, for (UFC President) Dana (White), it’s great. It’s great business for the UFC. Regardless of whether they fight or not, the UFC wins – and the fans. But there is a lack of respect. I think he crossed the line a bit.”

“With time, he’ll learn how to deal with those things,” Silva said. “I think he has to respect everything Jon Jones has done. It’s two great fighters. In the future, who knows – they might fight. But I’m from a time when you have honor. You respect everyone’s space. And that’s my opinion.”

It should be noted here that Silva and Jones are friends, so, the legend’s comments here shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s also true that Silva hasn’t really been much of a trash talker during his career.

Adesanya – Jones aside, Silva is preparing to face Jared Cannonier at UFC 237, May 10th. It will mark the first time the former middleweight champ has fought since Silva lost by decision to Adesanya in February.

Jones, meanwhile, will face Thiago Santos on July 6th at UFC 239. Adesanya won the interim 185 belt at UFC 236 on Saturday, by earning a decision win over Kelvin Gastelum.
