Tyron Woodley to Conor McGregor: “Come Get This Smoke”

Tyron Woodley has made it clear he wants an immediate rematch with Kamaru Usman. But since it’s looking like that’s not going to happen, the former welterweight champ is campaigning for a bout with Conor McGregor…again.

Woodley’s reign as the welterweight champ was ended by Usman earlier this month at UFC 235, as the latter scored a one-sided, decision win over the powerful fighter. Woodley has argued that his run as the champ warrants an immediate rematch with Usman, but it’s been reported that the UFC intends to have Colby Covington fight for the belt next.

So who could be next for Woodley? Well, during a recent chat with TMZ Sports, Woodley said the following  about McGregor (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I’d tell him, ‘Sit your ass down and fight Tyron Woodley at 170,’” Woodley said. “We both just lost in a world title fight. You ain’t in no position to call no shots. You lost, you started a huge religious, culture war, you just got into some smoke by smashing a fan’s phone, you’re constantly in trouble, you constantly get passes. You get through Tyron and we’ll talk.”

“I’m dead ass [serious],” Woodley added. “I didn’t think about that until you just said it but I’m like, okay, he wants to fight Cerrone – never been a champion. He wants to fight Nate Diaz – never been a champion. He wants a rematch of Khabib immediately, so do I. I don’t look like I’m getting an immediate rematch so it looks like we dangling around Conor. Come get this smoke.”

As it stands right now, the chances of this fight happening seem pretty, pretty slim to none. If Woodley was still holding the welterweight title say, and if McGregor was still the lightweight champ, then maybe, maybe the UFC would put this bout together.

But, it’s hard to imagine McGregor moving up to 170 to face Woodley, in a fight with no titles on the line. McGregor hasn’t talked about competing at welterweight recently, and most folks would concede fighting Woodley isn’t a favorable match-up for him on paper. Especially since McGregor is coming off a pretty convincing loss.

Further, recently McGregor talked about how a third bout with Nate Diaz needs to happen. So, don’t be surprised if the UFC’s working on making that fight a reality.
