SmackDown Women’s Title Plans? + Superstars React To Charlotte Win

-If you have not yet watched last night’s SmackDown, be warned: spoilers ahead.

That said, in a surprising move, Charlotte Flair became SmackDown’s Women’s Champion last night when she made Asuka tap out. Charlotte is now an eight time champion. But, just eleven days out from WrestleMania, what does it mean?

One thought is that Charlotte could, of course, drop the belt again between now and then. That could allow for the blue belt to be defended, without any risk to the main event. Another is that the blue belt isn’t defended on the show at all (which would be a really bad idea).

Another rumor, making its way around social media, is that the move indicates WWE may in fact unify the women’s titles. The logic behind the rumor is that the creation of the tag titles created a thinner talent pool.

While I understand that thinking, it’s flawed. Both women’s locker rooms have good depth, as there are plenty of Superstars who could be given the opportunity on either brand-Nikki Cross, Lacey Evans, Carmella, Naomi, Mandy Rose and on and on. If depth was truly an issue, you have two or three (maybe more) women in NXT who could be called up in short order to help (Io Sharai, Shayna Baszler). NXT can address their depth by bringing in more women from the past two Mae Young Classics.

This one is worth watching. It will be interesting to see what WWE does with the SmackDown Women’s Championship next Sunday, considering it’s been disrespected on the Road to WrestleMania.

-Speaking of SmackDown women, the impromptu title match also sacrificed another women’s match, and the women who missed out were less than pleased.

The plan before air was to have a fatal fourway match, with the idea being the winner of that would challenge Asuka at WrestleMania. The match was slated to be between Naomi, Carmella, Mandy Rose and Sonya DeVille.

It will be interesting to see if there is a SmackDown Women’s Championship defense at all at WrestleMania.
