Although Donald Cerrone and Conor McGregor have both relayed they want to fight each other, and Dana White’s also on board, the fight has yet to be finalized. So what gives? Well, recently Joe Rogan provided some insights on why the all-star bout has yet to be booked.
Cerrone has been campaigning for a fight with the former champ for a little while now, and after “Cowboy” took out Alex Hernandez in January, McGregor said he was down. But, with March now underway, there’s been no word on the fight being signed.
Rogan recently had former UFC fighter Brendan Schaub on his podcast, and while discussing Cerrone – McGregor, the veteran commentator said this (quote via MMA News):
“They were trying to do ‘Cowboy’ versus Conor and apparently the sticking point was that it was going to be a co-main event,” Rogan said. “I think the idea is that they have to have world titles as a main event for pay-per-view.”
“I think he’s only interested in big fights,” Rogan said. “Like things that excite him now because he’s got so much money and so much success. It’s just one of those things.”
Now, does this mean this fight won’t happen? No. But, it does help explain why the fight hasn’t been booked yet. The UFC has been using title fights to headline pay-per-view cards for a while now, so much so, they’ve been creating interim belts left-right-and-center…
McGregor, however, remains one of the biggest names in all of combat sports. So, main event status and pay-per-view points are likely a must.
