Conor McGregor’s legal team has released a statement, denying that his retirement is connected to a recent report from the New York Times, which says the star’s being investigated due to a sexual assault allegation.
McGregor recently made headlines by tweeting out that he’s done fighting. Since then, the New York Times has published a report, which cites four sources who have told the outlet McGregor’s under investigation for an alleged, sexual assault in Ireland. The former UFC champ has not been charged with any crime.
In a follow-up report from ESPN, a statement from McGregor’s legal team stated this:
“This story has been circulating for some time, and it is unclear why it is being reported now,” Karen Kessler, a spokesperson for McGregor’s legal team said.
“The assumption that the Conor retirement announcement today is related to this rumor is absolutely false. Should Conor fight in the future, it must be in an environment where fighters are respected for their value, their skill, their hard work and their dedication to the sport.”
McGregor recently said negotiations were ongoing for his next bout with the UFC, before announcing his retirement.
