Recently Pedro Munhoz took a dig at Aljamain Sterling’s winning performance over Jimmie Rivera, and the comments clearly didn’t sit well with the UFC bantamweight contender.

Sterling faced Rivera at UFC Phoenix last month, and worked his way to a clear-cut, decision win over the dangerous fighter. The victory was Sterling’s third straight and the fourth in his last five fights. The win also moved the 29-year-old into the #3 ranking at 135.

Munhoz, meanwhile, is currently ranked #4. While discussing the title shot picture recently, Munhoz argued that Sterling’s win over Rivera was “boring”. The Brazilian fighter also insinuated that “Funk Master’s” style isn’t fan friendly.

Well, more recently, Sterling was asked about the possibility of facing Munhoz. While doing so, the New York fighter said this (quote via MMA Fighting):

“If that matchup were to happen, I love my chances against Pedro,” Sterling said. “I saw him do an interview with some MMA website, talking about my style is not friendly for the fans, the fans want blood, he thinks I’m just going to try to out-wrestle or out-grapple him or whoever else I fight.

“My response to that is, hey dummy, did you watch my last fight with Jimmie Rivera, the guy that you fought? Did you see me get any takedowns? Did you see me needing a takedown? Or was I not picking that guy apart on the feet? In my opinion, you’re afraid. I guess I might be the new Ben Askren of the 135-pound division.”

“You (Munhoz) had two great finishes in Bryan Caraway and Cody Garbrandt, I give you that,” Sterling said. “But I smacked the crap out of Caraway in the first round…he also fought Jimmie Rivera and that was a split decision, and I smacked (Rivera) up.”

How about that? Now, even if you believe Munhoz is a more exciting fighter than Sterling, you have to admit the latter has a very comprehensive arsenal and is a complete fighter.

Now it will be interesting to see if Munhoz and Sterling end up fighting. Since we know Marlon Moraes is going to fight Henry Cejudo for the vacated 135 title on June 8th, Munhoz – Sterling makes a ton of sense right? Especially since the #2 ranked Raphael Assuncao is coming off a loss to Moraes.
