It is no secret that several WWE superstars have asked for their release from the company. With the arrival of AEW, many are seeing their release as a new opportunity to revive their career.
The many release requests could pose a serious problem for the WWE, especially with several contracts due to expire. Like in the days of the Monday Night Wars, the WWE could end up with a serious bleed of talent.
One man who knows the talent acquisition game better than most is Eric Bischoff, the man at WCW who used to be the thorn in Vince McMahon’s side. Now, Bischoff has spoken out about the WWE’s release problem, and poses a matching solution.
Strings Attached
With Chris Jericho becoming a serious AEW supporter and promoter on social media, it is not entirely impossible that lots of superstars are looking at AEW for greener pastures. Naturally, this could be a problem for the WWE.
“It’s a talent driven business, and the Khan family is willing to write a big check for Chris Jericho and they’re willing to write big checks for other talent who may be in WWE but not happy.”
According to Bischoff, “tying superstars up in as many strings as possible” is the way to prevent a talent bleed. What does this mean? Basically, it means finding loopholes in the fine print of contracts to keep their talent in-house.
“If I was Vince McMahon right now I would probably tie them up in as many strings as I possibly could. In fact I’m sure he already has.”
The Switch Won’t Be Easy
For those WWE superstars who have their heart set on joining AEW, Bischoff warns that this transition will not be easy. In fact, most WWE superstars have deals that prevent them from working for an indie promotion for a predetermined amount of time.
“I don’t think there’s a lot of talent in WWE that can just wake up on Monday morning and go, ‘You know what? I’m gonna quit and I’m gonna go work for these guys.”
Despite how difficult the transition can be, WWE talent should consider their options wisely. In fact, it is known that AEW will allow their talent to work shows outside of AEW. With a big money offer and some creative freedom to boot, there are not many reasons why someone would turn down an offer like that.
