Matt Hardy Broken + WWE Files For New Trademark

-Fans of Matt Hardy should, without a doubt, recall his Broken persona that existed in IMPACT. When he and his brother Jeff left the promotion, there was a battle over the rights to the Broken character. Due to the dispute, when Matt embarked on his latest solo run in WWE, he was not Broken, but rather Woken.

In spite of transitioning to an altered name and similar character, the legal pursuit of the likeness of Broken Matt Hardy didn’t stop. Now, it can.

Matt Hardy posted this on Twitter, confirming that he had indeed been awarded legal ownership of the name and likeness Broken Matt Hardy.

Whether or not this means that we might yet see Broken Matt in WWE remains to be seen. For that matter, given how Hardy said last year that he was “going home”, we don’t know when, or even if, we will see him back in a WWE ring at all.

PWInsider has uncovered a new trademark filing by WWE. Earlier this month, they filed a trademark on the name “Worlds Collide”, for wrestling purposes. This is similar to (but different from) the old AAA “When Worlds Collide”.

Early speculation on what this could be used for has already begun. This could be another PPV, perhaps more formally pitting SmackDown and RAW against one another (perhaps taking that away from Survivor Series in the process). One I prefer to that, however, is something with more international flair. Perhaps WWE is working on a partnership with a lesser promotion overseas and this could be a joint show. My other thought could relate to NXT. With NXT UK now fully up and running, and their first TakeOver this weekend, perhaps Worlds Collide could be an NXT versus NXT UK themed show, which could be interesting.
