kathry griffin mother dementia

Comedian Kathy Griffin revealed on social media Thursday that her mother Maggie has been suffering from dementia. The 58-year-old entertainer called the ordeal “heartbreaking” and noted that the photo she shared on Twitter was from September and  “was the last time I was able to have a proper/coherent conversation with her.”

Griffin said that her mother has “rapidly fallen into the throes of dementia” since the photo was taken, and added that while millions deal with this disease, it is never easy for a child to see a parent go through such a thing.

Griffin said the fact that her mother has always had a sharp mind has made this all the more painful.

“My mom is 98 and up until this past couple years she was so sharp she always kept me on my toes,” Griffin said, adding that at this point her mom “only knows my name and I love you.”

Griffin said her mother wasn’t in pain and was getting quality care.

The comedian said a big part of the reason she was sharing this news is because in the past, she has frequently posted videos of her mother and her dog “Twinkle.” When she stopped sharing those videos, it was because of her dementia and she wanted her fans to know the reason.

Griffin also shared photos and videos of her mom from Maggie’s appearances on Griffin’s Bravo reality series, “My Life on the D-List,” which aired from 2005 to 2010.

“What I am most proud of when I comes to ‘My Life On The D List’ is that show gave me the opportunity to show the world how naturally funny my parents were,” Griffin said. “When people tell me they feel like they know my mom, I always respond ‘you do!’ She never put on a show, she was the show.”

While Kathy Griffin has made many Americans mad with her constant anti-Trump crusade–including the despicable severed head controversy–no one wants to see another human being go through what she’s dealing with right now. There comes a time to put politics aside, and we wish Mrs. Griffin and her family all the best during these trying times.
