A pair of WWE Superstars have requested their release from WWE. According to Pro Wrestling Sheet, Mike and Maria Kanellis are not happy with the direction of their characters and informed WWE officials a few weeks ago that they want out of the promotion.
They have struggled from the start since joining WWE. They debuted at the 2017 Money in the Bank (MITB) pay per view with a gimmick about love. They were sent to SmackDown and worked a few matches with mid level talent like Sami Zayn, but quickly fell to jobber status. After Maria announced her pregnancy only months after MITB, Mike rarely competed on TV. At the same time, Mike revealed he has been abusing prescription pills for years and recently sober.
After doing nothing RAW, Mike was sent to SmackDown where he again rarely appeared. In October, Maria returned after giving birth and worked the first all women’s Evolution pay per view. Both then joined the 205 Live Brand, where they lasted appeared in losing effort alongside TJP against Kalisto and Lince Dorado in December.
This was Maria’s second run with WWE and first for Mike. They had a decent amount of interest coming to WWE after becoming big stars in Ring of Honor and other major promotions around the world. Plus, they were even able to skip NXT, which does not happen often.
They join The Revival, who asked for their release at Monday’s RAW. As of now, there is no word if WWE granted the release(s) of Mike Kanellis, Maria Kanellis or The Revival. The way things have been playing, those names might be of interest for All Elite Wrestling.
Below are tweets showing Mike’s body change after kicking the nasty habit and a picture of their baby.
