Service Dog Sully Says a Final Farewell to His Friend George H.W. Bush

President George H.W. Bush passed away on Friday, November 30 and his family and a grateful nation mourned over the weekend. However, humans weren’t the only ones thinking about and missing the 41st president as a photo shared on Instagram showed his service dog, Sully, staying close to his human until the very end. The photo was simply captioned: “Mission complete.”

When did President Bush get his dog, Sully?

While Sully was a relatively new member of the Bush family, he was greatly enjoyed by President Bush following the death of his wife, Barbara in April. He was even given the president’s middle initials of “H.W.” when he joined the household.

Bush’s Twitter account posted in June, “A great joy to welcome home the newest member of our family, “Sully,” a beautiful — and beautifully trained — lab from @AmericasVetDogs. Could not be more grateful, especially for their commitment to our veterans.”

Sully was trained and placed with President. Bush by American Vet Dogs, a nonprofit that provides trained service dogs to veterans in need.

Where will Sully go now that President Bush has passed away?

In a separate post of the same photo, President George W. Bush said that Sully will go to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he will continue his service as a companion to servicemen and veterans in need.

Bush has a long history of helping veterans as well as the disabled. One of the hallmark achievements of his presidency was the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which over the past 28 years has afforded many Americans, myself included, with access and opportunities to lead normal and fulfilling lives.

Pres. George H.W. Bush’s remains arrived in Washington D.C. via Air Force One and will lay in state at the Capitol until the funeral on Wednesday. Bush will be buried next to his wife and daughter, Robin, in College Station, Texas near his presidential library.
