dennis quaid cocaine addiction

Actor Dennis Quaid recently opened up about dealing with drug addiction and what it took to get his life back on the right track.

Quaid told The Sunday Times that he used cocaine during the 1980s when he was beginning to become a popular actor. He even said he used about two grams per day before he decided to seek help.

“I liked coke. I liked it to go out,” he told the outlet (via the UK’s Daily Mail). “I had one of those white-light experiences where I saw myself being dead and losing everything I had worked for my whole life. So I put myself in rehab.”

64-year-old Quaid said he was able to stay sober for a decade until he started drinking.

“I started drinking again because alcohol was never my problem,” Quaid said. “I never liked the feeling of being drunk.”

“I spent many, many a night screaming at God to ‘Please take this away from me”

Quaid said the alcohol was merely a crutch, not a means to an end, in that he only used it to come down from the far more intense cocaine highs.

“I was basically doing cocaine pretty much on a daily basis during the ’80s,” Quaid told Megyn Kelly in July.

“I spent many, many a night screaming at God to ‘Please take this away from me, I’ll never do it again because I’ve only got an hour before I have to be at work,’” Quaid said.

“Then about 4 o’clock in the afternoon, I would be, ‘Oh, that’s not so bad.’ I had a white light experience where I saw myself either dead or losing everything that meant anything to me.”

Quaid also discussed divorce, family life, and his current girlfriend in his lengthy interview with The Times.

Quaid is lucky to be alive given the amount of drugs he’s admitted to doing but we’re glad he got his life in order. He’s an example to all who have gone down the wrong path with substance abuse that it can be done with determination and leaning on God when it’s just too hard.
