Jim Carrey Calls for Fans to Embrace Socialism – It Immediately Backfires

Last week, Hollywood star Jim Carrey spoke out to urge the American people to “say yes to socialism. Days later, this has already come back to bite him, as a Venezuelan journalist has spoken out to slam him for issuing this call.

“We have to say yes to socialism — to the word and everything,” Carrey said during an appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher.” “We have to stop apologizing.”

Fox News pointed out that this was particularly ridiculous coming from Carrey since he is known to be one of the wealthiest actors in Hollywood.

As a journalist living in Venezuela, Laureano Márquez knows first hand how damaging socialism can be for a country. Socialism has wreaked havoc on Venezuela in the last few years, turning it from a flourishing nation into a chaotic mess. Márquez writes for the Venezuelan outlet Runrunes, which is one of the few outlets left in the country that still publishes anti-socialist viewpoints.

Naive About Socialism

In an article for Runrunes, Márquez replied directly to Carrey to tell the actor that he thinks he is being very naive when it comes to socialism.

“Dear Jim, I admire you a lot, but sometimes it seems that the inability of Hollywood stars to understand politics is directly proportional to their talent,” Márquez began. “I read that…you said: ‘We have to say yes to socialism, to the word [‘socialism’] and to everything.’ Perhaps for you, as for all humanity, the word ‘socialism’ sounds beautiful.”

The reporter went on to explain that today’s version of socialism has “deep threats.”

“[In] Venezuela, what we find is just that our regime is not – for God’s sake – the antithesis of selfishness,” he wrote. “In Venezuela, dear Jim, from what I have just told you, there is no equitable distribution of wealth; wealth is concentrated, as rarely before in our history, in very few hands.”

Márquez pointed out that people have been fleeing Venezuela “however they can” at alarming rates because they don’t have access to basic necessities like food and water. This is backed up by the United Nations, who has said that 1.6 million Venezuelans have left the country since the start of 2015. This has created a migrant crisis all over South America in which locals have had violent altercations with the refugees.

Perhaps Carrey should do a little research about the effects of socialism before he calls for people to “say yes” to it again!

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
