Fans of the Allman Brothers band are praying this week after guitarist Dickey Betts, a founding member of the band, had to undergo brain surgery on Friday after slipping and falling in his Florida home.
NBC News reported that Betts, 74, was playing with his dog last Monday when he slipped and cracked his head. His manager David Spero explained that the fall caused Betts to start bleeding from his brain. Thankfully, a statement on Betts’ website states that the surgery was a success.
“Dickey Betts and his family want everyone to know that his surgery was a success,” the statement read. “The outpouring of support from all over the world has been overwhelming and amazing. We are so appreciative.”
Betts’ wife Donna let fans know that she believes her husband will overcome this.
“Dickey is a notorious fighter and he is displaying that now!” she said. “The family appreciates all of your thoughts and prayers during this very trying time.”
This comes just one month after Betts suffered a “mild stroke” that forced him to cancel tour dates. He had planned to return to performing in November, but those shows have since been canceled.
“It was just a few days ago that Dickey was telling me how excited he was to get back in front of the fans on November 1,” Spero said. “It is very unfortunate, for all involved, that we need to cancel those shows.”
Spero is asking fans to keep praying for Betts as he tries to recover.
“Thank you all so much for your wonderful thoughts and prayers,” read the statement on his website. “We will keep you updated.”
