Being in the British royal family may seem like it’s all fun and games, but there is actually a long list of intricate rules and protocols that members of the family are expected to follow at all times. That’s why it has come as a big surprise that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been breaking these rules left and right since their marriage back in May.

Since their wedding, Harry and Meghan have proven themselves to be an unorthodox royal couple that very much wants to do things their own way. Travel and Leisure reported that before they were even married, Harry made it clear that he was willing to break the royal rules just to make Meghan happy.

In 2016, when the two had just started dating, Harry traveled to the Caribbean for an official royal trip. Though he was expected to fly back to the United Kingdom afterward, Harry canceled his British Airways flight at the last minute so that he could instead go to Toronto to be with Meghan. This blatantly violated the royal family’s policy, which states that “working visits should not be combined with personal travel.”

This is actually a huge deal to the Royals as they fear that changing plans last minute will be perceived as them misusing tax dollars. Prince Andrew knows this all too well, as he found himself in hot water in 2004 when he was caught combining taxpayer-funded business trips with personal vacations.

“In order to avoid confusion, combining private and public engagements in the same trip is actively discouraged,” the palace said at the time.

Though Harry is believed to have paid for his flight to Toronto himself, the royal family was likely very unhappy with his actions.

Since joining the royal family, Meghan has also shown a willingness to break the rules, as she has been spotted violating royal etiquette on numerous occasions. This just goes to show that Harry and Meghan intend to be “modern royals” who aren’t so constricted from all of the rules and protocol that has kept the royal family so closed off from the public in the past.

Do you think Harry and Meghan are in the right here, or should they make more of an effort to follow the royal rules?
