Arizona Senator John McCain passed away over the weekend at the age of 81 after a long battle with a glioblastoma, which is an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Though the entire nation is in mourning for McCain, nobody is more devastated than his mother Roberta, who is 106 years old. While she has not yet spoken out herself about her son’s passing, a family friend has opened up to reporters about Roberta’s thoughts on what happened. The friend told People Magazine that Roberta is “incredibly proud” of her son.

“Roberta was his biggest supporter and the leader of his fan club. She was incredibly proud of him,” the source said. “His mommy loved him. He knew that.”

The friend went on to say that Roberta “is a very strong woman,” citing her age as proof of her strength.

“She is all there, mentally, and is still going strong at 106,” the friend said. “She outlived her 81-year-old son. That tells you a lot. But it’s a tough blow to bury your child.”

The source added that Roberta had spoken to McCain on the phone right before his death and that she knew how serious his illness was.

“I can only imagine what she’s going through,” the tearful friend said of Roberta.

Roberta had always been a vocal supporter of her son’s political career, even giving a speech to his campaign staffers at the age of 96 back in 2008.

“Johnny is going to be the president of the United States and he’s going to keep the traditions … and the standards high,” she said as the crowd applauded. “All we want is a world where we can raise our children, have a chance at prosperity and happiness, and we can vote any way we want to. I can’t thank you enough … I wish I could kiss each one of you on the cheek. If I get a chance, I will.”

Nobody should have to bury their child, so we can’t even imagine what Roberta is going through right now. Please keep Roberta and the rest of the McCain family in your thoughts and prayers!
