Young Gymnast With Prosthetic Leg Dreams of Olympics

Eleven-year-old gymnast Averie Mitchell doesn’t accept excuses. She lost her leg when she was just two due to a rare condition. Her mom put her in a gymnastics class a couple years later and she has been impressing everyone with her athletic prowess and determination ever since.

The preteen just competed against other gymnasts without disabilities. Remarkably, this girl who wears a prosthetic leg came in third place on the beam and tenth place overall at the Amateur Athletics Union National Championships.

Averie says her goal is to go to the Olympics. Her skill set far exceeds many able-bodied gymnasts, so don’t count Averie out! Her no-excuses approach to sports is an inspiration. She does not complain or make excuses. Instead, she finds a way to reach her goals. Watch her floor routine below – it’s amazing!

“The hardest part about doing gymnastics with a prosthetic is that I don’t have an ankle joint, but I just power through. I’ve just learned to deal with it,” Averie said.

Averie was born with a broken tibia that failed to heal, which is why part of her right leg was amputated. Her parents Kimberly and John wanted to ensure that her disability would not impede her living life to the fullest.

“It was devastating to have done everything right during my pregnancy to find out that she was born with what we thought was a broken leg. I was determined that Averie would grow up doing whatever she wanted,” Kimberly said.

The Mitchells are very proud and amazed at what their daughter has accomplished in spite of her disability.

“I’m super proud of all she’s accomplished,” John, who is assistant police chief in Hugo, Oklahoma said. “It’s been a great joy to watch her compete and win medals.”

In an era when people are looking for the easy way out, Averie Mitchell refuses to take no for an answer as she tumbles and flips around on her prosthetic leg.

Averie explains her determination to succeed in the inspiration video below.
