The New Day has reigned over the WWE tag team division – and WWE merchandise sales – for nearly four years now, but their reign could be coming to an end. More specifically, there’s heavy speculation that Big E could be in line for a big singles push.

The speculation started with the announcement of a match between The New Day and The Bar on next week’s episode of SmackDown. The winning team will get to enter one member into the Money in the Bank ladder match on the upcoming eponymous pay-per-view.

Feasibly, any one of these five men could wind up in the MITB match – but PWInsider’s Mike Johnson believes it will be Big E. Here’s what he had to say about it on PWInsider Elite Radio (transcript via Ringside News):

“Big E moves onto the Money in the Bank match. He makes the most sense. He can be a base for a lot of the other guys. If there was ever a time to break this team up and have Big E pushed to the next level – it’s probably now where the team is still popular. I don’t think they are at the apex of where they were. You could still have New Day with Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods. I think it’s overdue that Big E gets a singles push. Perhaps we will get that now.”

I have to say: as much as I love The New Day, Johnson makes a compelling case. No offense to Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston, but of the trio, Big E seems the most capable of standing on his own – and carrying a world title. Furthermore, now might just be the right time to break them up. The New Day recently lost the top spot no longer a top seller in terms of merchandise, which could be an indication that they’ve grown stale with fans. It’s much better they go out on top rather than after their act has been run into the ground.

However, even if Big E is the chosen one to continue on to the MITB match, he’ll have stiff competition to nab the coveted briefcase. As of this writing, confirmed participants in the men’s MITB ladder match include Braun Strowman, Finn Balor, The Miz, and Rusev, with four competitors TBD. In other words, it’s unlikely that Big E would win the match – but it could very well be the start of a big singles push for him.
