Brinks Truck Spews at Least Half a Million on Highway

Drivers on an Indianapolis highway thought they ran into a big payday when bags of money fell out of a Brinks truck. It is estimated that about $600,000 was dropped on westbound I-70, near Holt Road. People stopped to pick up cash but they may be in hot water now.

People stopped their cars after they noticed the money that had fallen out of the Brinks truck that was obviously not properly secured. Some people climbed the fence to grab cash off the side of the highway as traffic continued. Watching over a half a million dollars in cash fly around the highway must have been like a scene out of a movie!

“Bags of money were falling out of the back onto the interstate,” said Indiana State Police Corporal Brock McCooe.  “Sort of something out of a movie scene, where you have bills, loose bills flying all over the interstate, vehicles stopping, people getting out of their cars.”

Four men in a pickup were seen grabbing an entire bag of cash. Appallingly, a school bus driver pulled over and got out of the bus to gather loose bills. Police do not know if there were children on the bus when he veered off the road and exited to line his pockets with the cash along the highway.

“I guess it’s not every day you see thousands of dollars just floating around on the interstate during your morning commute,” McCooe said.  “So it was pretty chaotic.”

Money Grabbers in Hot Water

Police now are searching for people who grabbed cash as they will be charged with theft. Apparently, the rules of “finders keepers, losers weepers” don’t apply to this situation. If people want to return the money, they will be granted amnesty in this case. Some people have already come forward.

More information and video of cash along the highway is can be viewed below.

It would be quite a shock to see bags of money falling out of a Brinks truck. If anyone picked up some of the cash, they can return it to the Indiana State Police by calling 317-899-8577.

“If you’re willing to, in good conscience, turn it back in, there’s amnesty, there’s no real questions asked if you’re willing to give it back,” McCooe said.
