5 Fast Facts About Ember Moon

Former NXT Women’s Champion Ember Moon has made her presence known since her main roster debut on the Raw after WrestleMania, earning her way into the women’s Money in the Bank match.

Here are five fast facts you should know about the “She-Nom,” Ember Moon.

5. She Trained Under Booker T

Hailing from the great wrestling state of Texas, Ember Moon likely had no shortage of schools to choose from when she decided to pursue a career in pro wrestling. After beginning her training under Skandor Akbar in April 2007, Moon quickly enrolled in Booker T’s Pro Wrestling Alliance (now called Reality of Wrestling). Based in Houston, Booker T’s school was located more than four hours from Moon’s hometown of Garland, but she faithfully made the drive every week – and made sure to be back home in time for school the next morning. That’s serious dedication, and obviously, it paid off: eight years later, Moon joined her mentor in WWE.

4. She’s Married To Indie Wrestler Matthew Palmer

Count this as something new I learned while researching this list: Moon is married to fellow pro wrestler Matthew Palmer.

There’s not much information about Palmer out there; his most notable accomplishments seem to be a handful of title runs in Anarchy Championship Wrestling, including one stint apiece as the ACW Hardcore and ACW Heavyweight Champion, and two stints as ACW Tag Team Champion. ACW is also where Palmer proposed to Moon in the middle of the ring in 2012. As you can read in Moon’s Instagram post above, they’ve been together for more than 8.5 years, which is an eternity in the world of pro wrestling. Maybe they should give some other wrestling couples some advice.

3. She Competed In A Women’s TLC Match – Before the Women’s Revolution

The start of WWE’s Women’s Revolution can be traced back to February 2015, but it didn’t get going until that July, when Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, and Charlotte debuted on Raw. And by the time the seeds were only just being planted to kill the term “Divas,” Ember Moon had already competed in a women’s TLC match.

Moon – then known as Athena – battled Hania the Huntress in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match for Women Superstars Uncensored (WSU) in February 2015. After getting put through a table and smacked in the face with ladders, Moon defeated Hania after fighting for nearly half an hour.

Also, it should be noted: despite having women headline Hell in a Cell, introducing a women’s Money in the Bank briefcase and a women’s Royal Rumble match, WWE has yet to have a women’s TLC match.

2. She Plays D&D… And Wrote Wrestling Fanfiction

Lots of wrestlers have nerdy hobbies. Zack Ryder is obsessed with Funko Pop! figures; Zelina Vega cosplays; Xavier Woods is an avid gamer. But Ember Moon’s hobbies might be a bit nerdier – and, ahem, embarrassing – than others’.

It’s no secret that Moon plays Dungeons and Dragons; she says as much in her Twitter bio, and in October 2016 she told a fan that one character she played was a half-dragon elemental monk. I don’t know much about D&D, but it seems fitting giving Moon’s wrestling persona.

However, Moon divulged another little-known hobby of hers on an episode of Wood’s YouTube series “UpUpDownDown.” Apparently, at some point in her past, she wrote wrestling fanfiction. Specifically, wrestling fanfiction about Evolution.

Understandably, Moon refused to divulge any more than that. But I can’t even knock her, for I, too, have written wrestling fanfiction. And if I’d ever made it in the business, I don’t think I’d have had the guts to admit it.

1. She Tried Out For WWE Four Times Before Being Signed

If you don’t succeed, try, try again. Ember Moon lived by that age-old adage because she tried out for WWE no less than four times before she was finally signed.

Moon first tried out for WWE in 2007 at the age of 19. However, WWE was still very much entrenched in the “Divas” era back then, and they informed Moon she didn’t have the “right” look. Hurt but unhindered, Moon worked even harder and tried out again in 2008, and then again in 2009. Finally, in 2015, Moon decided that she would either be signed by WWE or retire – and luckily for all of us, she made her dream a reality.
