Why Is the WWE Universe Protesting Against the Name of the Women’s Battle Royal?
It is no secret that the Fabulous Moolah was an impressive woman in wrestling, but she was also surrounded by lots of controversy as a trainer and a promoter. Many wrestlers referred to her as a “shady” person. Various stories came to light in the past twenty years, accusing Moolah of sex trafficking, financial abuse, and even keeping her wrestlers under her thumb with illegal substances.
Several wrestlers have come forward over the years to tell their story; this included Sandy Parker and Ann Casey. Ida Mae Martinez even stated that “personal services” were demanded before wrestlers were paid.
Still, one of the most shocking stories came from Barbara McCoy, the daughter of Susie Mae McCoy, a protege of the Fabulous Moolah. According to Barbara, her mother was raped, given drugs, and made an addict in order to control her.
WWE made the right call in changing the name. I’m sure a lot of people will chastise them for honoring Moolah in the first place, but you can’t yell at someone to change and then berate them after they change for not doing it soon enough.
