Controversy Surrounding Naming Wrestlemania Female Battle Royal After Fabulous Moolah

Since female wrestlers must be on par with the men where events are concerned, the WWE decided to do a Wrestlemania Battle Royal for women too! The bout will be named after The Fabulous Moolah, the WWE’s longest reigning women’s champion.

Who Is Fabulous Moolah?

There is undoubtedly logic behind the choice of naming the women’s Battle Royal after the Fabulous Moolah. Moolah, real name Mary Ellison, was one of the most iconic women in wrestling history.

Moolah was the first WWE women’s champion. She held the title four times, but also had the longest reign stretching a whopping ten years! So, naming the Battle Royal after the Fabulous Moolah was almost an obvious choice.

Controversy

Not everyone is happy with the name of the women’s Battle Royal though, mainly due to the controversy surrounding Moolah and her treatment of trainees.

The issue came to light with the story of Sweet Georgia Brown, a black female wrestler. Brown’s children claimed that Moolah allowed Brown to be sexually assaulted and then drugged her and took her earnings to keep Brown under Moolah’s control.

Former WWE wrestler and valet Luna Vachon supported the story and referred to Moolah as a “shady person.” Luna claims Moolah forced her to pose for a creepy old man to take pictures.

I must admit that Moolah has a checkered past, but this does not take away her contributions to wrestling. However, with our current climate and the heightened state of awareness surrounding sexual assault and women’s issues, WWE may have picked the wrong namesake for this historic contest

When Will the Fabulous Moolah Battle Royal Take Place?

The first Fabulous Moolah Memorial Battle Royal will take place at WrestleMania 34, which will be aired live on April 8, 2018. Much like the Andre the Giant Trophy, the Fabulous Moolah Trophy will have a similar design with the likeness of Moolah on top.
