As the name of the tournament suggests, the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic is named after the American Dream Dusty Rhodes, an American professional wrestling legend who died in 2015.

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic has been held on the NXT brand two times in the past. Once in 2015, where Samoa Joe and Finn Balor took the prestigious title, and once in 2016, where the Authors of Pain earned the win.
