Dolly Parton Reveals Her Mom’s Special Soup Recipe – I Can’t Wait To Make This For My Family!

Dolly Parton’s childhood stories are so heartwarming. Her family didn’t have a lot but they had each other, and that was more important than having riches. The love their mother had for her children was evident, especially in her recipe for stone soup.

Dolly’s mother had a twist on the centuries-old story about two beggars who made magical stone soup by getting villagers to put in “just one more ingredient.” She would have all 11 children search for a stone. Then they had to scrub the stones before presenting them.

Her mother knew which child needed the most attention, so she would choose that child’s stone. She told the children that special stone is what made the soup so delicious! It was a way of making her kids get some extra loving!

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients
2 quarts chicken stock or canned low-sodium broth
1 pound russet potatoes, peeled and diced
1 (14 ½ ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 small head cabbage, coarsely chopped
1 pound turnips, peeled and diced
2 large carrots, diced
1 small onion, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 smoked ham hock
1 very clean stone (optional)
Salt & Pepper

Directions

Combine the stock, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, turnips, carrots, onion, garlic, and ham hock in a large soup pot. Add the stone, if using. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the soup is thick and the vegetables are fork-tender, about 2 hours. Remove the ham hock from the soup, remove the meat from the bone, and chop it into ½ inch pieces. Add the meat back to the soup. Season to taste with the salt and pepper. Serve piping hot.

You can watch Dolly make the soup and tell this endearing story in the video below.

There is a lot of nostalgia in that recipe. Dolly sure grew up surrounded by love, which is far more lasting than any financial fortune!
