The great Johnny Cash’s career experienced a resurgence from 2002-2003 when he released a new album that included covers of non-country songs.
Cash was introduced to a younger audience while old fans got to rekindle and relate to Cash sing about getting old and friends and loved ones passing on.
Johnny Cash passed away in September 2003 and the July before he died, he gave one final acoustic performance at the Carter Family Ranch. It was a testament to Johnny’s appreciation for his fans. It was obviously very difficult for him to perform in this condition, but he pushed through to provide one final memory of “The Man In Black.”
Johnny performed some of his classics as well as gospel favorites. Cash also talked about his wife June, who had recently passed. He talked about how proud she was to write “Ring of Fire.” June wrote this song with Merle Kilgore, who was the best man at her wedding to Johnny. The song was about her relationship with Johnny before they were married. She wrote it while driving around thinking about Johnny’s wild ways with drugs and her inability to resist him. Johnny believes June helped save his life by helping him get off drugs.

Beautiful and sad. He could barely stand, but he never gave up. He wanted to entertain his fans one last time. His tributes to June were beautiful. The love between them was incredibly powerful. They must have had an amazing reunion in Heaven when Johnny joined her there in paradise.
