Angelina Jolie is one of the most recognizable and most famous actresses in all of Hollywood. During her illustrious career, Jolie has won countless awards, including two Golden Globe Awards and one Academy Award.
While Jolie has been an extremely successful actress on her own, many people likely do not know that she comes from a very talented family, being the daughter of one Jon Voight. Unfortunately, Jolie and her father have not been on speaking terms since 2002, after Voight claimed his daughter had “serious mental problems” after the two filmed the movie Laura Croft: Tomb Raider together.
Jolie and her dad have always had a contentious relationship, but her father’s comments in 2002 seemed to destroy things, causing Jolie to legally drop “Voight” from her name, even though she had never used her last name professionally. At the time, Jolie said that she dropped her last name because she “wanted to have my own identity – I didn’t want to walk into a room as ‘Jon’s daughter.'”
Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie and her father are attempting to rebuild their relationship, with Jolie explaining in a recent interview that “We’ve had some difficulties, [but] through art we’ve been able to talk. It’s the common language. We don’t really talk politics well. We talk art very well.” Voight is an outspoken conservative whereas Jolie is known for her strong liberal beliefs.
It appears as though Jolie and Voight have been attempting to rebuild their relationship for several years, especially after Jolie’s ex-husband, Brad Pitt, convinced the two to reconcile.
In an interview with Vanity Fair in July, Jolie explained the role her father has had in her life recently, especially with his young grandchildren. “He’s been very good at understanding they needed their grandfather at this time. I had to do a therapy meeting last night and he was just around. He knows kind of the rule – don’t make them play with you. Just be a cool grandpa who’s creative, and hang out and tell stories and read a book at the library.”
It’s great to see Jolie and her father working to improve their relationship. The feud between the two Hollywood stars has gone on for too long and was likely tearing the family apart. Jolie’s children deserve to have a relationship with their grandfather and it’s nice to see her allowing her dad to spend time with them.
Now that Jolie and her father have apparently fixed their problems, maybe they can appear in another film together! Fans of both stars would love that!
