There will be a massive change to Raw’s commentary team. It will only be for one night though. It will involve the absence of a voice that has been on Raw or Smackdown non-stop for nearly 20 years. Michael Cole, the lead Play-By-Play voice for WWE, will miss Raw to attend his son’s wedding. A familiar voice will replace him.

Instead, the night’s action…. will be called by SmackDown LIVE’s Tom Phillips.

This will be a rare moment:

This marks only the second time in 20 years that Cole — considered “The Voice of WWE” — has missed a week of WWE television broadcasts.

Another notable time that Cole “missed” Raw was after being attacked by Brock Lesnar on the Raw following Wrestlemania 31.

A few fans wanted NXT and former Smackdown commentator Mauro Ranallo to fill-in, but he seems content where he is.

Tom Phillips Is The Future

Tom Phillips is being groomed to replace Michael Cole on WWE television. In a few short years, he has moved from NXT to the backstage interviewer to Superstars and Main Event, to helming commentary on Smackdown Live and its exclusive PPVs. Phillips is young and bright. He has a unique voice has yet to be turned into a heel or even a face much like Cole was.

Expect a lot of ribbing from fellow Raw commentator Corey Graves.
