Major Warning Issued For All Airline Passengers

Flying can be an uneasy experience these days. Seat spaces have gotten much smaller in recent years. It can be downright uncomfortable being stuck in a cramped seat for hours as you get to your destination. Now, new information claims those tight seats aren’t just bothersome, they can be dangerous as well.

A lawsuit filed by the non-profit group Flyers Rights has exposed this potentially dangerous fact. Airlines have been shrinking the size of coach seats for years without any reports on possible safety repercussions.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia has ordered the FAA to respond to the lawsuit to study the safety of the size of today’s coach seats and come up with new rules.

One of the judges called the change in seat sizes without updated safety regulations “a plausible life-and-death safety concern.” Flyers Rights is claiming the size of a coach seat has shrunk from 18.5 inches to 17 inches since the early 2000s. Those tight spaces certainly could have an impact on how quickly people can deplane in an emergency. President of Flyers Rights, Paul Hudson called coach airline seating “a Titanic waiting to happen.”

Larger seats would clearly make fights a little more comfortable and perhaps more safe, but if fewer seats are going to be on planes in the future, expect the airlines to possibly raise prices to make up for fewer passengers.
