Just days after the solar eclipse, the largest asteroid ever tracked by NASA will be sailing past Earth. The asteroid, named Florence, which measures almost 3 miles wide, will be passing our planet on September 1.
It is the largest object to come this close to us since NASA started tracking in 1998. But, there isn’t cause for alarm as it will be 4.4 million miles from Earth. It certainly is a great reason to get out your telescopes and look at the sky, though!
Astronomers are quite thrilled about this occurrence as Florence hasn’t been this close to Earth since 1890 and it won’t come any closer until 2500!
While Florence will be closer to Earth, the asteroid will still be 18 times further away than the Moon is from Earth. This is just a once in a lifetime phenomenon that should have us star gazing once again.
Share this if you will watch for Florence!
