Over the weekend, a video featuring Hollywood legend Jim Carrey speaking to former convicts went viral as the actor offered a powerful faith-based message that often is ignored in Hollywood.

The video, which was taken in June, features Carrey speaking to Homeboy Industries, an organization which seeks to provide “hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community.”

In the speech, Carrey says of the inmates “You are heroes to me, and I admire you. When you stepped through these doors, you decided to be a part of this family. You made a decision to transcend and to leave darkness behind, and it takes a champion to make that decision.”

Carrey then offered some powerful faith-based insight:

Your being here is an indication that you’ve made that decision already. You’ve made the decision to walk through the gate of forgiveness, to grace—just as Christ did on the cross. He suffered terribly and was broken by it, to the point of doubt and a feeling of absolute abandonment, which all of you have felt. And then there was a decision to be made, and the decision was to look upon the people who were causing that suffering, or the situation that was causing that suffering, with compassion and with forgiveness. And that’s what opens the gates to heaven for all of us.

While many are praising Carrey for his inspiring comments, there are some that say the Hollywood star shouldn’t be invoking the name of Jesus Christ, given that he had previously defended Kathy Griffin’s photoshoot featuring a decapitated President Trump.

Military veteran Wayne Dupree is one such individual, calling Carrey a “hypocrite” for his comments invoking Jesus.

Regardless of whether Carrey is a hypocrite or not, his comments to these convicted felons are extremely powerful and should be shared with everyone. With so much-anti religious messaging coming out of Hollywood, Carrey’s comments are a breath of fresh air.
