The father of the modern zombie movie, George A. Romero, has died at age 77.
Romero was renowned in the horror industry for his cult classic film, Night of the Living Dead. Made for just $114,000 in 1968, the film was universally panned by critics – but it paved the way for everything from the hit AMC TV series The Walking Dead to the politically charged The Purge films.
Members of the Hollywood horror community mourned the loss of Romero across social media:
Romero passed in his sleep after a “brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer.” He died while listening to the score of one his favorite films, 1952’s “The Quiet Man,” alongside his wife, Suzanne Desrocher Romero, and daughter, Tina Romero.
As a huge fan of The Walking Dead and the horror genre in general , I’d like to say: thank you George A. Romero!
