On Monday, the International Olympic Committee officially announced that Los Angeles will host the 2028 Summer Olympics. The announcement comes after Los Angeles had initially sought to host the 2024 Olympics, but Paris was selected for that year, meaning that an American city will host the Summer Olympics for the first time since Atlanta hosted in 1996.

The official announcement will occur in Lima, Peru on September 13, but the Los Angeles 2024 Olympic Bid Committee will hold a news conference on Monday night where the city’s mayor, Eric Garcetti, is expected to confirm the selection.
The city’s mayor made clear that he didn’t want Los Angeles to host the Olympics at “any price. I won’t accept these Games if they put the city in debt or at risk. I won’t do it if there’s not a genuine human legacy and instead, it’s just a vanity party for 2 1/2 weeks.”
Initially, Boston was the United States’ selection to host an Olympic games, but a very public #NoBostonOlympics campaign and fears over the taxpayer cost of the games forced Boston to drop its bid.
ESPN notes that 88% of Los Angeles residents support the city hosting the games, but in recent years the IOC has had trouble finding cities willing to bid for either the Summer or Winter Olympics, given the high costs associated with putting on this global event.
While many Americans are happy that Los Angeles will host the Olympics, one man, military veteran Wayne Dupree argues that no city in California should be allowed to host the Olympics.
Dupree argues that California’s support for “sanctuary cities” should disqualify any city from hosting the Olympics.
