It first hit the airwaves on February 22, 1966. The song quickly went to Number 1 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 as well as on the UK Singles Chart.
The success of the song has attracted a number of different artists to cover it, including Loretta Lynn and Jessica Simpson. Other notable artists to cover the song include Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington, the Supremes, Billy Ray Cyrus, David Hasselhoff, Boy George, and Kacey Musgraves.
