Anderson Silva recently made it clear that he’s not too happy with the UFC these days, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon.
On a recent episode of “The MMA Hour”, Silva blasted the UFC for its decision to grant Georges St-Pierre a title fight with Michael Bisping. In addition, the former middleweight champ said he wants an interim title fight with Yoel Romero, or he’s “done”.
The comments caused quite a stir throughout the MMA world, as Silva hasn’t typically been one to criticize the UFC publicly. But, here’s some of what Dana White told TMZ Sports recently, when the UFC President was asked about Silva’s ultimatum (quote via MMA Fighting):
“Every time I’ve, for the last however many years, deal with Anderson, it’s always interesting,” said White. “[SIlva] wants an interim title, obviously we’re not going to do an interim title…”
“Bisping’s ready, willing and able to fight the actual No. 1 contender, who is Yoel Romero,” he added. “Anderson Silva is ranked No. 7 right now. If he’s willing to take the Romero fight for June — because he was supposed to fight Kelvin Gastelum. You know, Anderson’s mad. I didn’t pull Kelvin Gastelum out. Kelvin Gastelum smoked weed, and now he got busted, and you know we’ve done everything we could to make another fight for Anderson.”
It’s not surprising, really, that the UFC isn’t putting up an interim 185 belt. After all, Bisping defended the title in October by defeating Dan Henderson. Although, the UFC has made ‘interesting’ choices in the past with interim titles.
You have to wonder if the UFC has approached Silva and Romero about fighting – not for a title -, and if that’s the hangup. Now that GSP has come out and said he’ll be ready to fight Bisping “after October” , however, maybe things could change.
