Following Robert Whittaker’s impressive win over “Jacare” Souza, Luke Rockhold’s called on him to throw down at UFC 213, but’s not clear if the rising star’s on board.

Whittaker put Souza away in the second round at UFC on FOX 24 on Saturday night, and in doing so, established himself as one of the top contenders at 185. Well, after the win, Rockhold apparently reached out MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, and called Whittaker out for a July 8th fight.

But, when Whittaker was asked about the former champ’s proposal, the Australian fighter had this to say (quote via MMA Junkie):

“It’s news to me,” Whittaker said. “It’s cool, but it’s too fresh. I’ve got to get back home to my kids, I’ve got to see my wife. Let me see my family first. It’s a bit rushed. It’s too much to process at once.”

Fair enough. Now some might argue that July 8th is still a ways away, and it’s true that Whittaker would have plenty of time for a full camp.

But, Whittaker didn’t outright say no, and further, he likely wants to discuss his options with his team and management. After all, the UFC could come with an offer to fight Yoel Romero later this summer, if Michael Bisping – Georges St-Pierre isn’t going to take place until then. The winner of that would almost certainly be next for a title shot.

This doesn’t mean, however, that Whittaker – Rockhold wouldn’t also be an outstanding fight…
