Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme has died at 73.
Initial reports from IndieWire indicate he passed away from esophageal cancer, as well as issues related to heart disease.
“He was originally treated for the disease in 2010, but suffered from a recurrence in 2015, and his condition deteriorated in recent weeks.”
Along with Silence of the Lambs, Demme also directed the 1994 remake with Denzel Washington, The Manchurian Candidate. He also directed the 1976 film Fighting Mad and the 1988 film Married to the Mob.
Demme’s 1991 film Silence of the Lambs won five Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
His latest work was Ricki and the Flash starring Meryl Streep.

Demme is survived by his wife Joanne Howard and their three children.
