They call him “White Death.” He’s the deadliest sniper of all time. Deadlier than Chris Kyle. He “is someone of whom you have never heard, has a name you probably cannot pronounce correctly, fought in a war you can’t identify, and has not yet had a movie made about him.”
His name was Simo Häyhä. In the Winter War fought between Finland and Russia he killed 505 Russians. That’s confirmed kills. Some reports suggest he killed 705 Russians. What’s even more amazing is he did it in only 10 months.
This detail of his technique and what he did is amazing:
Häyhä had his own sniping technique. He relied on snow. He would dig a hole so he could shoot from the sitting position, which he favored, and pile a mound of hard-packed snow in front of it to give him concealment. He would even keep snow in his mouth to keep his breath from steaming. Häyhä would take shots up to 400 yards, but he refused a scope.
All that, and he only stood 5 feet and 3 inches tall.
He was a survivor too. The Russians hit Häyhä with an exploding bullet which nearly tore half his face off. However, he managed to kill the man who shot him. Despite being disfigured from the wound, Häyhä survived and lived to the age of 97, passing away in 2002.
After recovering from his wound he was hailed as a national hero and promoted to lieutenant, before returning to his quiet life as a moose hunter and dog breeder.
A remarkable story. One which will be translated onto the silver screen in 2018!
