After Donald Trump called out Ford for moving all of its small car production to Mexico, UAW Local 900 Plant Chairman Bill Johnson revealed that Ford will now plan to build Rangers and Broncos in Fort Wayne, Michigan.
Johnson spoke to the Detroit Free Press saying, “We hate to see the products go to Mexico. But with the Ranger and the Bronco coming to Michigan Assembly that absolutely secures the future for our people a lot more than the focus does.”
Trump called Ford’s move to Mexico a “disgrace.”
Further confirming the deal to bring the Bronco and Ranger to Michigan was a UAW contract signed late last year noting an unnamed “new product” would be coming to the Michigan plant in 2018 followed by a second new model in 2020.
Ford also announced it was adding four nameplates to its SUV lineup by 2020.
Autoweek reports the new Bronco will more than likely be bigger than the old 1996 model and use the existing F-150 template. However, Motortrend reports it could be similar to the Ranger architecture and powertrain.
Donald Trump’s move to call out Ford and threaten them with a massive import tax looks to have forced Ford’s hand into a compromise. They might be moving small car production to Mexico, but they are bringing trucks back to America. If Donald can bring this kind of pressure when he isn’t even President just imagine what he can do when he is President of the United States.
