The hardest part of owning a dog is saying goodbye. Their life spans are much shorter than ours. We get so bonded to these wonderful animals, knowing that they are only our short term companions.
But, one Australian dog broke the record on longevity by living for 30 years! She hadn’t even been the vet since she was spayed!
Dairy farmer Brian McLaren got Maggie the Kelpie when his son was just four years old. Today, his son is 34. He never expected his gentle friend to live this long, but he was happy to spend three decades with her.
The McLarens are now mourning Maggie‘s passing, but Brian reports that she was still getting around the week before she died.
“She was still going along nicely last week,” her owner Brian McLaren, a dairy farmer, told the Weekly Times. “She was walking from the dairy to the office and growling at the cats and all that sort of thing. She just went downhill in two days and I said yesterday morning when I went home for lunch … ‘She hasn’t got long now’.”
Maggie fell asleep in her basket and never woke up. Despite her age, her passing was peaceful rather than agonizing and traumatic.
McLaren will miss Maggie but he realizes how blessed he was to have her for so many years. You can see a video of Maggie in action below.
