Rodney Dangerfield was a relatable man and nothing ever seemed to go right for him. That was his schtick and we all could understand and appreciate that! Most of us have experienced some sort of failure in life, which made Dangerfield’s comedy even funnier.
In 1967, Dangerfield was trying to reinvigorate his career when he got the break that he needed. His career was going nowhere when suddenly “The Ed Sullivan Show” needed an immediate replacement. Rodney jumped at the chance and stole the show. After that, he became a regular on the show, and a star was born in his mid-40s.
On November 23, 1969, Dangerfield was back on “The Ed Sullivan Show” with an ensemble of guests that was quite impressive. The Rolling Stones, Ella Fitzgerald, and Robert Klein joined him for this episode. All the top stars wanted to be on the primetime talk shows at that time. This episode was legendary!
Rodney brought his A-game that night. He entertained us with tales of his wife, his children, and how nobody ever gave him any respect. He said when he was born, they bought him a baby carriage with no brakes. That’s how little respect he had, even as a baby.
Dangerfield complained about his New York apartment that did not have the modern day comforts. “And I’ll tell ya, in my apartment, nothing works. I got a radio, I can hardly hear it. I got a television set, I can’t make out the picture,” he told the audience. “But when my wife opens her mouth, perfect reception.”
