From the late 70s to the mid-80s, them Duke boys were appointment viewing for many households all around the world. The Dukes of Hazzard was very popular, and like many popular shows in the 80s, it featured many guest stars and appearances.
The thing with The Dukes of Hazzard is that they really leaned into this. Starting with the second season, the show introduced the “Celebrity Speed Trap” which would feature some kind of celebrity – usually a country music star – but many other celebrities appeared over the years.
Today we are looking at the top 10 celebrity appearances on The Dukes of Hazzard – before driving off because you disagree with these choices, put the General Lee in reverse, come back, and share your own list!
Number 10 – Waylon Jennings: “Welcome, Waylon Jennings,” Season 7, Episode 2
There is no better way to start this top 10 celebrity guests on The Dukes of Hazzard than with Waylon Jennings! In fact, Waylon Jennings was the narrator, or the “balladeer” if you prefer, of The Dukes of Hazzard.
This musical legend would finally get to appear on camera as himself. Even better, Jennings’ appearance is not just part of the Celebrity Speed Trap! Waylon Jennings is actually an important part of the episode as we find out he’s an old friend of the Dukes and he has come to town in his tour bus and traveling museum. Boss Hogg sees dollar signs and hires a couple of goons to try and steal the tour bus!
Number 9 – Claude Humphrey: “Repo Men,” Season 1, Episode 4
Here we have a very early episode from The Dukes of Hazzard and one of the more fun and unique celebrity appearances on the show. Claude Humphrey was a former NFL star, playing for the Falcons and the Eagles. More, he’s an NFL Hall of Famer, and a man who is super respected for all he did on the field!
He would have a fun guest appearance on The Dukes of Hazzard where he would play a guy called Big John, who is a counterfeiter and finds himself tangling with the Duke boys and Boss Hogg. This is a very fun performance and if you are a football fan, you no doubt get a huge kick out of seeing this huge defensive end causing trouble in Hazzard County!
Number 8 – Donna Fargo: “Double Dukes,” Season 4, Episode 2
The stunning Donna Fargo ends up caught in the Celebrity Speed Trap and she gets her way out of it by performing her song, “Lone Star Cowboy.” What is interesting about this, and what makes her a good entry on this top 10 celebrity appearances on The Dukes of Hazzard list, is that “Lone Star Cowboy” is not one of her biggest hits.
She had a string of number one country hits, such as “The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA” and “Funny Face.” You have to wonder why “Lone Star Cowboy” was chosen. As far as the actual episode goes, this is some real fun stuff as Boss Hogg gets these masks and has two goons to pretend to be Bo and Luke so that he can frame them!
Number 7 – Bob Hastings: “Witness for the Persecution,” Season 1, Episode 9
Bob Hastings is an actor with a huge resume. If you’re into superheroes, you may recognize his voice from the many Marvel and DC shows he’s done over the years. His voice work is superb and he is probably best known for his role as Commissioner Gorden in Batman: The Animated Series.
In this episode, Bob Hastings plays a hitman who is hired to take down Boss Hogg so that he keeps his mouth shut! This is a fun entry as it’s also not tied to the Celebrity Speed Trap.
Number 6 – Tammy Wynette: “The Hazzardville Horror,” Season 3, Episode 4
Next up on this top 10 celebrity guests on The Dukes of Hazzard list, we have some country music royalty with Tammy Wynette. She is a true icon of country music and she would grace us with her hit “Rocky Top” after she is caught in the Celebrity Speed Trap.
This is one of the more fun and memorable episodes of the show. Some of Boss Hogg’s silver has gone missing and he suspects the Duke boys, but some paranormal happenings may or may not be going on too! This was basically the Halloween special for this season, even though it did air a week after Halloween in 1981.
Number 5 – The Oak Ridge Boys: “Granny Annie,” Season 2, Episode 10
Ok, we are cheating here a little bit. You see, “Granny Annie” would be the first episode of The Dukes of Hazzard to feature the Celebrity Speed Trap and it would be the country super group, The Oak Ridge Boys, performing their hit “Old Time Lovin” that would start this “gimmick”.
However, The Oak Ridge Boys would return in the Season 3 episode, “State of the County.” This time, they would perform “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight.” The fact that they were on the show twice is awesome, but you do have to question their decision to once again drive through Hazzard County after already being tricked by Boss Hogg!
Number 4 – Hoyt Axton: “Good Neighbors,” Season 3, Episode 11
Here we have a real personal entry on this top 10 celebrity guests on The Dukes of Hazzard list: Hoyt Axton. While many people will love how he performs his country hit “Out of State Cars”, for me, it’s the fact that it’s Billy’s dad from Gremlins who has been caught in the Celebrity Speed Trap that makes this guest appearance so awesome.
While Hoyt Axton performing the song is fun, you can actually see Roscoe taking notes as he does and that is hilarious! This is a pretty packed episode with the Dukes protecting people in the witness protection program from bounty hunters and Boss Hogg thinking he is going to get even richer thanks to some uranium!
Number 3 – Johnny Paycheck: “The Fugitive,” Season 4, Episode 5
What makes the appearance of Johnny Paycheck so much fun in this season 4 episode is that he is performing his hit song, “Take This Job and Shove It”! A fun bit of trivia is that he actually lip-syncs his way through this performance, but we won’t hold that against him as he puts on one heck of a show and you can tell that he is clearly having a blast (even if he did get caught in Boss Hogg’s Speed Trap.) This is a fun episode that involves the Duke boys trying to save a pretty girl who stumbles into a conspiracy where Boss Hogg is stealing motorcycles and trying to sell them!
Number 2 – Mel Tillis: “The Rustlers,” Season 2, Episode 3
You know, I came so close to having country music superstar Mel Tillis as the number one pick here. What is great about him being a guest star on The Dukes of Hazzard is that he was not just playing himself, caught in The Celebrity Speed Trap.
Instead, Mel Tillis would play an actual character, Burl Tolliver, who is a friend of Jesse’s. Burl has a really fast horse that he wants to enter in the Lulu Hogg Stakes Race, but when Boss Hogg hears about how fast this horse is, he steals it and plans to use it for himself. This is a fun and very typical Dukes of Hazzard episode and Mel Tillis is fantastic and adds a great deal of charm to the episode.
Number 1 – Roy Orbison: “The Great Hazzard Hijack,” Season 3, Episode 21
The fact that Roy Orbison performed his biggest hit, “Pretty Woman”, is what made me feel he deserved to be the top of this top 10 celebrity guests on The Dukes of Hazzard list. This is actually a great episode where Bo and Luke find a bunch of stolen money and end up being tricked into helping the people who stole it!
Of course, poor Roy Orbison is just trying to make his way through the county when he ends up caught in old Boss Hogg’s Celebrity Speed Trap. They had some very famous singers appear on the show, but you could make the argument that Roy Orbison was the biggest global star to be caught in Boss Hogg’s trap!
