Don’t mess with a classic. It’s a simple rule. The “Golden Girls” have stood the test of time. Yet, in the quest for everything to be diverse, our beloved “Golden Girls” is getting a makeover in a reboot starring an all-Black cast.

It’s hard to imagine Dorothy, Sophia, Blanche, and Rose being played by anyone other than the original actresses. The syndicated series still gets strong approval ratings from viewers decades after the show’s television reign was over.

The “Golden Girls,” which ran from 1985-1992 is still believed to be one of the greatest sitcoms of all time. It is even more popular now than when it aired. Why change it now?

Black Actresses To Portray ‘Golden Girls’

Alfre Woodard, Tracee Ellis Ross, Sanaa Lathan, and Regina King will star in the “Golden Girls” reboot.

All four actresses shared the news on their Instagram accounts. From the promotional pitch, it appears that Lathan is Blanche, King is Dorothy, Ross is Rose, and Woodard plays matriach Sophia.

The announcement is in the Instagram post below.

The first episode airs Tuesday, September 8 on Zoom. The sign up page goes into more detail:

“In an effort to further engage our community and drive change, all you need to do to enjoy this evening is sign up to receive messages about how you can make a change during this election!

This event is in partnership with Zoom, and the first episode is spotlighting and supporting Color of Change – the nation’s largest online racial justice organization.”

Casts of cult classic sitcoms, like “The Office,” have done reunions recently, but this will be a completely different spin.

Betty White, who was Rose, is the sole surviving “Golden Girls” cast member and does not appear to be in the promotional material outside of being featured with her original cast mates.

It isn’t clear whether the cast will reenact an old episode or use new material, but the event’s description states Lena Waithe will host the virtual watch party and the episode will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who received praise earlier this year for Netflix’s popular action film The Old Guard.

Blanche And Rose’s Mud Mask Episode Shelved

“Golden Girls” previously was targeted by cancel culture.

Recently, an episode in which Blanche and Rose wore mud masks was pulled for being racially insensitive since the masks could be construed as blackface.

That wasn’t enough and now there will be a racial alternative to this beloved television show.

This reboot of “Golden Girls” with a black cast will happen at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST Tuesday on Zoom. Registration is required to watch this new spin on an old classic.
