The Rock world lost one of its greats on Monday with the passing of George Young. The musician, producer, and songwriter was 70 years old. He was a member of the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame for his work with Vanda and Young and also as the guitarist for The Easy Beats.
He co-wrote Easy Beat top hits, such as “Wedding Ring,” “She’s So Fine,” and “Friday On My Mind.” But, Young was probably more well known for being a producer for his younger brothers’, Malcolm and Angus, from AC/DC. The Young brothers were born in Scotland but emigrated to Syndey, Australia in 1963.
AC/DC acknowledged George’s death to fans on Facebook. It’s clear that Malcolm and Angus were very close to their older brother. Not only did he launch their musical career, but they shared their lives together. Their personal and professional worlds are intertwined below.

You can see the Easy Beats perform “Friday On My Mind” in the video below. The group was seen as Australia’s response to the British Invasion and particularly of The Beatles. David Bowie later covered this song, launching it further into fame.
Together with Harry Vanda, Young became a producing legend. Vanda and Young produced AC/DC’s freshman album High Voltage as well as the band’s next four albums. The producing duo also worked with Aussie hard rock groups such as Rose Tattoo and the Angels.
George Young retired from the music industry in the 1990s. However, he came out of retirement and returned to the studio in 2000 to produce AC/DC’s album Stiff Upper Lip. The album reached Number 3 in Australia and Number 7 in the United States.
George Young is survived by his brothers. No cause of death has been reported, but the music industry is mourning the loss and celebrating the life of this pioneering giant.
