The Running Man trailer is here, giving viewers the first glimpse at Glen Powell in the newest adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel.

While there is a 1987 version of the film, director Edgar Wright’s newest installment aims to be more true to the book.

This is on the wave of other Stephen King adaptations, such as The Long Walk, premiering on September 12th, 2025, and the TV series The Institute, premiering on July 13th, 2025.

What is The Running Man About?

The dystopian sci-fi film is based on the bestselling novel by Stephen King of the same name.

Set in the far-off year 2025, America’s economy has crashed, and the country is run by a totalitarian government. Unemployed and blacklisted from getting a job, Ben Richards (Powell) becomes a contestant in the violent, state-sanctioned TV show The Running Man to get healthcare for his daughter.

Richards is tasked with surviving for 30 days while being hunted by Games Network-employed hitmen and the millions of viewers of the show. If Richards survives the full period, he’ll win $1 billion.

The trailer hints at the action-packed scenes, from Powell dodging bullets in a hallway to Michael Cera’s character pouring water to electrify men who are after Powell.

Differences Between the 2025 and 1987 Versions

There are quite a few prominent differences between the 2025 and 1987 versions of The Running Man.

One of the main differences is the adaptation, where Wright aimed for a close resemblance to Stephen King’s novel, while the 1987 film, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, had a more loose interpretation.

In the Arnold version, Richards is forced into the game show as a framed cop, while in the Powell version, he is blacklisted from working.

The scope of the two films is also different. While Arnold’s Richards had to fight in a closed-off playing area filled with killers, Powell’s Richards is on the run from the entire country, from professional hitmen to dedicated viewers of the show.

It will be interesting to see how closely they follow the events in King’s novel in this new version of The Running Man.
