It’s been twenty years since The Passion Of The Christ was released back in 2004. In the years since then, there has been constant discussion about a potential sequel, but nothing has come to fruition.
Until now.
The Passion Of The Christ Sequel Is Officially Happening
New reports have confirmed that a sequel for The Passion Of The Christ is officially set to begin filming in 2025.
Mel Gibson will be returning to direct, and Jim Caviezel will be reprising his iconic role of Jesus Christ. Francesco De Vito, who played Peter in the original film, will be returning to that role as well.
Gibson is reportedly currently in Malta with his production team scouting out potential filming locations. Israel and Morocco are also being looked at as places where the sequel can be filmed.
The original The Passion Of The Christ movie made over $600 million at the box office. It also garnered three Oscar nominations. In the twenty years since then, Gibson has frequently expressed his desire to make a second movie so that he can continue telling the story of Jesus.

Gibson Took His Time With This
Back in 2016, Gibson said that he was taking his time with the sequel. After all, to billions, it’s the “Most Important Story Ever Told.”
“We’re talking about that,” he told CP Entertainment at the time. “Of course, that is a huge undertaking. And you know, it’s not The Passion 2. It’s called The Resurrection. Of course, that’s a very big subject, and it needs to be looked at because we don’t want to just do a simple rendering of it — you know, read what happened.”
“But in order to read it, experience, and explore probably deeper meanings of what it’s about, it’s going to take some doing, and Randall Wallace is up to the task,” Gibson continued.
Wallace is the returning screenwriter of the original Passion Of The Christ film. He was previously nominated for an Oscar for Gibson’s 1995 movie Braveheart.
“The evangelical community considers The Passion the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger,” Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter back in 2016.
“I always wanted to tell this story,” he continued. “The Passion is the beginning, and there’s a lot more story to tell.”

Second Movie Won’t Have A Linear Narrative
In 2022, Gibson opened up about how complex the second movie will be.
“It’s not a linear narrative…you have to juxtapose the central event that I’m trying to tell with everything else around it in the future, in the past and in other realms,” he said. “It’s a difficult concept, and it has taken me a long time to focus and find a way to tell that story.”
Many have long felt that the original The Passion Of The Christ film is one of the best movies of all time. We can’t wait to see the sequel when it finally comes out!
