The legendary Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show for thirty years from 1962 until 1992, and during that time, he had countless epic moments that are impossible to forget. That’s why we decided to take a walk down memory lane and check out five of his best ones!
With so many amazing Carson moments to choose from, it’s difficult to pick the five actual best ones, but we’ve done our best by choosing five instances that have stood the test of time from his Tonight Show days.
Robin Williams And Jonathan Winters
The legendary comedians Robin Williams and Jonathan Winters were guests on The Tonight Show back in 1991, and their appearance became one of the most memorable ones of all time.
Williams and Winters played off one another beautifully as they reminisced about their time working together on the sitcom “Mork & Mindy,” and Carson couldn’t help but laugh as they completely stole the show.
Sadly, Carson, Williams, and Winters are all gone now, but they will always live on through clips such as this one.
Carson Holds Baby Orangutan
Throughout his time hosting The Tonight Show, Carson would frequently have guest Joan Embery bring various different animals with her for him to interact with. Carson loved having unpredictable guests, and it doesn’t get much more unpredictable than animals!
In this adorable clip, Carson met a two-and-a-half-month-old orangutan named Oliver, who immediately put his arm around the host when he picked him up.
When Embery said that Oliver is advanced for his age, Carson fired back by saying, “He looks like he’s stoned right now!”
Carson clearly enjoyed holding Oliver, and the smile on his face is nothing short of infectious. When an animal guest was set to come on, you always knew that you were in for a good show!
Don Rickles’ Royal Encounter
In this hilarious 1980 clip, the iconic comedian Don Rickles causes Carson to burst out laughing with his story about meeting a member of the British royal family.
When Rickles performed for Princess Margaret, the sister of Queen Elizabeth, he wasn’t sure how she’d take his comedy. She ended up loving it so much, however, that she came to meet him after the show, even telling him some jokes at the Queen’s expense.
Rickles had so much fun with Margaret that he told his wife afterwards, “This broad’s rich!”
The full clip is classic Rickles and Carson, and perfectly shows why we love them both!

Dolly Parton Sings Song She Wrote For Carson
Dolly Parton was a regular guest on The Tonight Show during Carson’s time hosting it, and during a 1979 appearance, she performed a song that she wrote for the beloved host.
Parton never called it The Tonight Show, instead preferring to refer to it as The Johnny Carson Show, and that’s what her song was about. In the song, Parton sang about how The Johnny Carson Show helped to launch her career and make her the country music legend that she is to this day.
The full clip is adorable, and serves as a reminder of how fun TV used to be. The bond that Carson and Parton shares really comes across in a big way!

Carson And Betty White’s Adam And Eve Skit
Sketch comedy was a staple of Carson’s Tonight Show, and one of the best examples of this is a 1979 Adam and Eve skit that he performed with the hilarious Betty White.
In the skit, Carson’s Adam and White’s Eve have decided to split up, so God sends them someone to help resolve the dispute. The skit takes some hilarious twists and turns from there, and it is sure to have you laughing hysterically by the end of it.
Carson and White have sadly since passed away, but this clip serves as a reminder of just how hilarious they really were. If only we still had someone like Carson on TV these days!
