Whoopi Goldberg shocked her fans this week when she claimed that she can’t “afford” to retire. This was surprising to many, as Goldberg makes $8 million a year co-hosting the ABC talk show The View. She also has an estimated net worth of between $30 million and $60 million.
Goldberg Can’t ‘Afford’ To Leave The View
Goldberg is preparing to turn 70 in November. Despite this, she has no plans to leave The View, which she’s been co-hosting since 2007.
Earlier this week, Goldberg was asked by Entertainment Tonight if she’s considering “slowing down” at all.
“Who can afford to do that?” an incredulous Goldberg fired back.
“If you don’t marry well, you gotta keep working,” Goldberg, 69, shockingly went on to claim.
The reporter, who was seemingly stunned by the Sister Act star’s response, pointed out that Goldberg “could probably afford” to retire. However, she wasn’t having any of it. Instead, Goldberg responded, “No, not by now. Not yet.”
“I gotta keep paying those bills, baby,” she concluded.
Goldberg’s Previous Comments On Her Finances
This isn’t the first time that Goldberg has complained about her alleged financial struggles. Last year, she told her audience that she wouldn’t even be on The View anymore if she didn’t need the money.
“I appreciate that people are having a hard time. Me, too. I work for a living,” she claimed during a Hot Topics segment about voting. “If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here, okay? So, I’m a working person, you know?”
“My kid has to feed her family,” she added. “My great-granddaughter has to be fed by her family. I know it’s hard out there.”
This didn’t sit well with many fans who pointed out just how privileged Goldberg is as a multi-millionaire.

Goldberg’s Romantic History
Goldberg’s comments about having to “marry well” also came as a surprise. The Oscar-winning star has been married and divorced three times.
Goldberg was first married to the drug counselor Alvin Martin from 1973 until 1979. With him, she shares her only child, a daughter Alexandrea, 52. Goldberg was then married to the cinematographer David Claessen from 1986 until 1988. Finally, Goldberg was married to the actor Lyle Trachtenberg from 1994 until 1995.
On top of that, Goldberg has been romantically linked to stars like Ted Danson of Cheers fame and the Oscar-nominated Frost/Nixon actor Frank Langella. These days, however, Goldberg is single, and she plans to stay that way.
“I’m not a good marrying person,” Goldberg admitted last year. “I always thought if I was married, I’d be closer to normal. But as it turns out, I’m just not normal and it’s something I’ve come to accept.”
Goldberg previously said that she’s “not that interested” in ever being in love again.
“I’m much happier on my own. I can spend as much time with somebody as I want to spend, but I’m not looking to be with somebody forever or live with someone,” Goldberg said in 2016. “I don’t want somebody in my house.”
Given how much money Goldberg appears to have, It seems a bit nutty that she feels like she can’t “afford” to retire at her age.
Season 29 of The View premiered earlier this week with Goldberg still on the panel. It remains to be seen if Goldberg will ever be able to save up enough money to leave the show!
