It’s been over 25 years since the sitcom Home Improvement went off the air, but it still is beloved by millions of fans to this day.
Tim Allen starred on the hilarious series from 1991 until 1999. In a new interview, he’s revealing the surprising inspiration behind his character Tim “The Toolman” Taylor’s iconic grunt.
Earlier this year, a TikTok user went viral asking men who match with her on Hinge to send her their best impressions of Allen’s grunts. Check that out for yourself in the video below.
Allen Talks Home Improvement Grunt
While being interviewed by host Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show on November 25, Allen was asked about this viral trend. Allen got the chance to react to some of the impressions before revealing how exactly he developed the grunt.
“It’s odd hearing them back-to-back,” Fallon, 51, said of the dating app submissions after playing a few of them.
“Well, it’s horrible hearing them back-to-back, actually,” replied Allen, 72. “Because it’s not that difficult.”
Allen went on to say that he developed the grunt from interacting with the men around him. He specifically thought of it after a conversation with the “Night Moves” rocker Bob Seger.
“It was like my new song,” Allen recalled. “I remember a long time ago, Bob Seger, from Detroit, saw me in concert. And he said, ‘You put butts in the seats, you own it, but you got to get a hook, something that people remember.’”
After receiving this advice, Allen started doing “corporate gigs” for audiences that were made up of “a bunch of drunk guys eating steaks.”
At these gigs, Allen would often hear grunts similar to the one that eventually became his Home Improvement trademark grunt.
“Thanksgiving at my house — there’s seven boys and two girls in my family — and men, when they’re eating, don’t speak,” Allen explained. He added that the men “just point” and grunt.
“So I started doing that,” he continued, “and it became a huge deal.”
Allen Still Gets A Kick Out Of The Grunt
Allen still gets a kick out of the grunt to this day. He remembers that since it had to be in the script, “somebody had to write it.”
Allen noted that it was spelled “Ough” in scripts, or “Ough?” when it was in question form, which it oftentimes was.
Allen’s Continued Sitcom Success
In the years since Home Improvement ended, Allen has continued to have great success on sitcoms. Indeed, he starred in the hilarious hit series Last Man Standing from 2011 until 2021.
These days, Allen is starring on ABC’s hit sitcom Shifting Gears. His former Home Improvement co-stars Patricia Richardson (Jill Taylor), Richard Karn (Al Borland), and Debbe Dunning (Heidi Keppert) have all made guest appearances on the show, which is currently in its second season.
In March of 2026, the cast of Home Improvement is set to reunite when they take the stage for a panel at their first-ever ’90s Con. Fans certainly won’t want to miss that!
Allen has been making hilarious shows for decades that the whole family can enjoy. We’re so glad to see that he’s still having fun with his legendary Home Improvement grunt.
God bless you, Tim Allen, and Ough!
