Meghan Markle, the wife of Prince Harry, is speaking out this week to compare herself to Barack and Michelle Obama. She did this as she desperately attempted to spin their respective Netflix downgrades in a positive light. Meghan also took the opportunity to seemingly take a jab at the British royal family.
Meghan’s Netflix Downgrade
Meghan, 44, and Harry, 41, signed a five year, $100 million contract with Netflix back in 2020. After years of flops from the couple, however, Netflix opted not to renew this contract when it expired last month. Instead, Netflix gave them a “multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects.” This “downgrade” is the same one that Netflix gave to Barack and Michelle Obama.
“In practice, it is a downgrade from the 2020 overall deal that birthed Harry & Meghan, Polo and With Love, Meghan, among other projects,” The Hollywood Reporter reported.
“The overall-to-first-look extension mirrors the move Netflix made recently with the Obamas — as well as others — for their Higher Ground banner,” the publication continued. “In both cases, the exclusivity carried by their respective, splashy original deals has been removed.”
Meghan Compares Herself To The Obamas
On Tuesday, Meghan spoke at the Fortune Most Powerful Women summit. There, she desperately tried to put her Netflix downgrade in a positive light by comparing herself to the Obamas.
“My husband and I were in an overall deal with Netflix, and then not just similar to Higher Ground in the Obamas’ deal, once that had come to its term, the extension of it, which was such an incredible sign of the strength of our partnership, was now being in a first look deal,” Meghan said.
“Which is also exciting, because it gives us flexibility to go to our partners first,” she continued. “And then at the same time, to be able to shop content that might not be the right fit for Netflix, but has a home somewhere else.”
“So for our non scripted team and our scripted team, we’ve been doing a lot of content development that can meet different rooms,” Meghan added.
Meghan Takes Apparent Jab At Royal
Meghan went on to take what many are interpreting as a jab at the royal family. She did so as she talked about when she and Harry moved to her native California after stepping down as senior royals in 2020.
“I think five years ago was a very different situation for all of us,” she stated. “Archie was so little and I had just gotten pregnant with Lili around that same time.”
“So we were nesting. Nesting and healing,” Meghan continued. “And also, I don’t know if I had the bandwidth at that time to think about what the “big picture” dream was. There was no plan. It was just ‘let’s just get through these next couple of years,’ create community, which was always so important to both of us in our new environment.”
The “healing” comment is what is being interpreted as a jab at the royal family. Indeed, it appears that Meghan feels that she needed “healing” after being forced to deal with the royals. However, many would argue that it’s the other way around, and the royals instead had to do some “healing” after being forced to put up with Meghan’s nonsense for years.
Netflix Has Had Enough Of Meghan
Meghan can try to spin her Netflix downgrade in a positive light all that she wants to, but it’s clear that both the streaming service and Hollywood in general have had enough of her.
“They have shot the golden goose of 2020 – more of a ‘we’ll call you’ than ‘here’s the checkbook,'” leading publicist Mark Borkowski recently told Daily Mail. “It’s a first-look deal, which means Netflix gets first dibs but no obligation to bankroll every semi-royal whim.”
“I reckon Netflix is trimming fat industry-wide, so this is less carte blanche, more curated cameo,” he added. “They’re still in business together. Meghan’s As ever brand and seasonal specials keep them in the Netflix shop window but make no mistake, this is a slimmed-down sequel to the blockbuster original. So Harry and Meghan’s new Netflix chapter is less champagne budget, more Prosecco by the glass.”
Given how unpopular Meghan is, the Obamas likely won’t be happy that she’s comparing herself to them. In the end, we can certainly see why Netflix decided to downgrade each one of these radical leftists. Good riddance!
