The singer and actor Justin Timberlake finally learned his fate in his DWI case on Wednesday, pleading guilty to a lesser offense.
Timberlake’s Plea Deal
TMZ has confirmed that Timberlake, 43, has reached a plea deal in his DWI case. This deal has allowed Timberlake to plead guilty to a less serious offense that is actually just a traffic violation. The deal is a major win for Timberlake, as he had initially being charged with driving while intoxicated. This DWI charge will now be dropped.
Per the deal, Timberlake will admit to Driving While Ability Impaired. While the word “impaired” is used, it should be noted that legally speaking, this is not a “drunk driving” offense.
The deal also states that Timberlake must pay a $300 to $500 fine. This won’t be a problem for Timberlake, who has an estimated net worth of $250 million! A judge will decide the exact amount between these two figures that Timberlake must pay on Friday, when the deal is brought before the Sag Harbor Village Justice Court.
Sources told Daily Mail that a crucial aspect of the deal was Timberlake’s willingness to do a public service video for the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Thanks to this deal, Timberlake will be able to put all of this behind him with no criminal record. However, Timberlake will still have his New York drivers license suspended for six months due to his refusal to take a Breathalyer test on the night of his arrest.
Timberlake’s Arrest
The plea deal was struck by Timberlake’s attorney Eddie Burke Jr., who has long denied that his client was intoxicated when he was arrested in Sag Harbor, New York in the early hours of June 18. He was pulled over while driving his BMW X7 home from a night out with friends at the ritzy American Hotel in the Hamptons.
After approaching Timberlake, officers claimed that he was “glassy-eyed” and that he smelled of alcohol.
“His eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests,” court papers read.
What makes the case particularly strange is that Timberlake’s lawyers alleged that police allowed Timberlake’s friend – who had “clearly” been drinking – to drive Timberlake’s car home after the incident.
Timberlake’s arrest report that was obtained by People Magazine showed that he’d told officers that he’d “had one martini and I followed my friends home.”
The singer spent the night in custody and was released the next morning.
